Flooding Could Impact California and West Coast

As residents brace for the strongest storm to hit the west coast in five years, PCI is urging everyone in the affected areas to be prepared for high winds, heavy rain, flooding and possibly some snow. This storm provides a good example of how flooding can occur even in areas that have been impacted by a severe drought. It’s always a good idea for individuals and communities to understand their flood risk and take precautions such as buying flood insurance.

Flood damage is covered by a separate flood insurance policy, not standard homeowners insurance. Generally flood insurance is bought through the National Flood Insurance Program and consumers can visit or call 1-800-427-2419. However, insurers are on hand to answer questions and help families and businesses quickly resolve problems, file claims and begin the process of recovering from these events.

If you live in an area susceptible to flooding, review your insurance policy and become familiar with what is and is not covered. Make an emergency plan and keep important papers in a safe, waterproof place. Recovering from flooding is always a challenging task, but there are resources available to help consumers.

PCI has resources available to help you learn more about flood risks. Follow us on twitter @PCIAA and use the #becovered or #floodsafety

If your property is damaged follow these steps to help in the recovery process.
